"York is the Avant-garde diva. Ingenious, radical, extravagant talent...this daring vocalist and conceptualist is able to turn her ruminations into fascinating musical explorations. York takes us to parts un-dreamed of.
The New Yorker

Since emerging from New York’s Knitting Factory jazz scene, Nora York has ignored musical boundaries. She has no use for the words "musical genre". On her third album, the aurally delicious What I Want, York stands tall and proud at the intersection of Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Jane Siberry and Norah Jones....stripped of any excess, it is, in a word, beautiful.”
Billboard Magazine

Musician, conceptual artist, singer, and educator Nora York makes deeply emotional, intelligent, and socially engaged music. From her earliest genre busting musical adventures to collaborations with contemporary composer Maria Schneider in Alchemy (released on ArtistShare) or past giants such as G.F. Handel in Water Water Everywhere, and Puccini in Jump -- York defines herself outside of musical category.  Her work has been commissioned by the Public Theater in NYC and The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation,  and earned her a two New York State Council for the Arts Composer's awards.  She often writes for television and film with her long time collaborator and co-composer (five time Emmy Award winner) Jamie Lawrence.

York has been teaching at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 1997.

Water Water Everywhere is a multi media song cycle about water—the poetic qualities of water as well as the scientific properties, history, and issues around the use and availability of water.  The work asks the audience to consider the essential value of water.

LISTEN TO MUSIC FROM JUMP!
JUMP, produced by The Public Theater in NYC for the Under The Radar festival 2011, was York's musical response to Puccini's Tosca. Collaborating with director JoAnne Akalaitis, co-composer Jamie Lawrence, and David Greenspan's re-imagining of Sardou's play La Tosca and the autobiographical writings of  fin de siecle celebrity Sarah Bernhardt. "Jump is a meditation on art and love, and the way that both require a leaps which like Tosca's from the tower, are both terrifying and exhilarating." Oskar Eustis Artistic Director of Public Theater.

the work frames Handel’s Water Music suites with original compositions to confronts the topic of climate change as it affects water—the oceans, rivers, aquifers, lakes, streams, wells, and our bodies and minds. This is both a love letter to water and a wake-up call. At its core, it asks the audience to consider the essential significance of water to all life on earth.
